I know you are not required to have them under a certain size, but I would not want to be out in a boat without them. My issue is what happens if you are out and wind dies, and you have motor trouble? Or you are on the beach and get invited to a cook out, no I have to get back before dark. You can go real old school and get some old kerosene lamps. They should be available at many consignment shops.

There are LED anchor lights that are attached to a long cord and a cigarette lighter plug. But I would really consider putting on the cheapest LED nav lights I could find. You never know when you might get caught out late. LEDs will run for days off a normal starting battery, so you will not have to increase your battery bank.
