It would be quite a mess if one end of that aft rail thing puled off. Then you loose control of the main...
There are different (and safer) ways to keep the main sheet on the end of the boom.

OH just one note. The way that thing is bent shows that whoever installed it doesn't have a clew of how it is supposed to work!
I'd guess the OP has either dealt with this or is using it as is.. but in any case he hasn't been around again since mid June 2011.. so I doubt he's listening
