Yanmar Diesel, repower or rebuild?

My Yanmar 3HM35F has a leaking rear crankshaft seal, and it's probably going to require taking the engine out of the boat (a big operation!) in order to get at it. A veteran Yanmar mechanic advises me that it's likely the crankshaft may be scored, so I should be prepared to replace or rebuild the engine if I'm going to the trouble to take it out of the boat.

Rebuilding would still leave me with an engine somewhat underpowered for my 39' Pearson. Repowering with the next bigger engine would be very expensive and require some work to get it to fit into the engine compartment

I could use some advice.

I'm planning to have the work done in Ensenada, Mexico, and would particularly like to know if anyone can recommend an engine rebuilder in So. California, or do I need to look farther away? I'm currently leaning toward the rebuild option, but nothing is set in stone....
