Re: make a gale sail

We ended up installing a Solent Stay for this very reason. Trying to slide the Gale Sail up during anything more than 20 knots seemed impossible. Now, we have the storm jib hanked, bagged, and waiting at the solent stay. All in all, if you can install it yourself, you'll have about $400 into the stay.

We bought the Wichard 9150 mast tang, two Facnor thimbles, two Wichard folding padeyes, Wichard Babystay Adjuster, and our stay is made of Amsteel Blue. You just need to cut a notch into the mast, mount the padeyes on deck with one acting as a backing plate, and glass a strong attachment point to the hull to keep the deck from flexing. I did most of this in Oriental NC while waiting for the tide to change.
