Those old push pin travelers are certainly less convenient and tend to not get properly used.. good news is for something less than a boat buck ($1K) it can be replaced with a good adjustable Harken or similar setup - the bolt spacing should match so as long as you have access below it's easily changeable.

While you're at it you may as well get a decent set of mainsheet blocks too - the whole package will be miles ahead of what you most likely have there now. Of course you could upgrade in stages too to spread the cost.

When it's windy the pushpins are not so bad because you leave each side 'down low' on the traveler and it will self tend... it's in light air where it's the most hassle.
