I have the Airmar ultrasonic speed which fits in the older shell for the old paddle wheel sensor. it has been in there for two years and has always been dead on and no moving parts, nothing to clean. my depth ( which i almost never use where I sail), is in hull type so no hole in the boat. airmar does make a speed sensor for transom mount but the transom needs to be down below the water to use this type. mostly for power boats
