Re: Sail boat/Yacht Partnership Experiences?
I terminated a partnership on a boat at the Ala Wai Harbor. The owner lives on the mainland and let me and another guy share the boat in return for paying his slip fees. The owner visits three months a year.
It all started when the other partner reported the tiller broken. A couple days later, he informed me it was fixed and wished me a happy sail. I pulled out today from the dock and the first time I put decent pressure on the tiller, it broke off in my hand! Right in cramped quarters amidst docked boats.
The outboard has always been screwed up and you can't reverse properly with it and it had been gerry-rigged. So there I was, no tiller, screwed up outboard trying to get back to the slip. Other boat owner screaming at me with f-bombs. Almost got into a fist fight with him. Yeah, like I'm doing this on purpose!!
Anyway, that's one nightmare story.
If you partner, it's important for everyone to be an owner. Also, don't enter into any partnership unless the boat is completely functioning. Don't accept boats with funky motors, and with an agreement that the boat is fully functional before entering the partnership.
If the owner doesn't return my security deposit, I hope he at least uses the money to fix the boat!
