A co-worker of mine rebuilt an engine, and being the exacting fellow he was, he aligned all the splits in the rings so they looked nice. He found out the hard way that you're supposed to stagger the ring splits or oil and compression can sneak past. He was pissed when his newly rebuilt engine was burning oil.
