Is there a significant reduction in working load limit of the entire rig when using chain links? I am not using a windlass (that's in lieu of my gym membership), so would it be better to use two big shackles to connect the two ends?

When the pin ends are properly peened down (the function of the ball on a "ball peen hammer") the chain link illustrated above is quite adequate. See (click on) ConnLink38 Chain Link. This item may also be available through SailNet which we should support if possible (all things considered, eh?)
