How do u find good crew for a race?

Doing the Newport to San Diego border run on my boat and I am looking for a few guys for the crew. Where should I start looking? Don't know too many people in my area and I am fairly new to sailing as you guys probably know. The race is April 6-7 plus another day to bring the boat back to Newport Beach. I may be doing more races so this may not be a one time thing. Also looking for someone fairly local as I want to practice 2-3 times per week with the crew up until the race. Im a bit apprehensive as in certain situations on a boat a crew member holds lives in their hands. I have read a few horror stories about bad crew members. Thanks in advance.
