Historical Sailing HELP needed!

Hi!

I'm brand new to this site, but I'm not a sailor!

I'm writing a story set in the 17th century. The ship I've set my piece on is a frigate. I've been able to find a lot of information on ship structure, riggings, steering apparatus, but -- here's where I've run into a snag.

I need to write a storm!

I've found a lot of storm information, but it's confusing. The way I've set it up, is that the storm is coming and not actually in the thick of it yet.

Do the head into the storm? Do they turn away from the storm? Do they lower the sails -- I've found info that says this is not the best strategy as they could capsize or be ahull? Not sure about that.

Could anyone here please give a bit of help or point me in the direction of help?

It would be most appreciated!

Thanks!
