iPhone4 and iPad2 w/o 3G

I bought an iPad 2 and purchased the Hotspot plan for my iPhone 4. Ideally to use as a chartplotter on my sailboat. The iPad2 w/o 3G does not apparently have a gps receiver. At the dock, my iNavX iPad app worked great, but unbeknownst to me it is using my dock wifi router as a location - the little blue triangle. On the first 2 sea trials, as I realized that I had lost connectivity and location, I switched the network to my iPhone 4 Hotspot, but the iNavX failed to pick up location. However, tonight a dockside check of the system worked.

There are iPad2 GPS antennas for about $100, but I want to know if anyone is using the iPhone4 for GPS reception and how that is working out for them.
