Sort of related... you could just turn the engine with the hand crank... but a warning.

A friend was using an old rusty handcrank to roll the engine over.. not intending to run it.. it caught on its own and the handcrank didn't disengage.. not much room in a Santana 30/30 to avoid the now spinning crank! Luckily after a few seconds it spit itself free without injury and he was able to pull the kill switch.

Sometimes diesels just want to run!....
