The only reason for a shackle is if you remove the sail each time you sail.
Well, the main reason I use a shackle is because I remove the halyard from the sail once it is down so that I can attach the halyard to a deck fitting on my pilothouse to avoid it banging on the mast. I'm one of those people who absolutely detests lines banging on a mast. I could do what Faster does and tie and untie the knot in both places, but the shackle is easier with no significant drawbacks in my experience. So I tied my new halyard onto my shackle with a buntline hitch, knowing it will tighten down and not come off, because I will not need to take it off until I may wish to swap ends of the line down the road.
