backing allmand 31

I may be taking a friend out on his Allmand 31. My friend is in a wheel chair and is a new owner and really doesn't know much about sailing. It will be mostly on me.

How does this boat behave In close quarters. His slip is second boat in from the end of the fairway in a just big enough slip with a pole and dock on the starboard and full length dock on the port.
He is bow in and I'm thinking that if I back out the stern should kick me port so the stern will be heading down the fairway to get out. If it will backup OK I can just keep going about 5 boat lengths backwards to get to the Chanel.

Wondering what my chances are of this boat behaving OK in reverse.

This summer for the first time I've been sailing a Bristol 32 and have not found the secret to figuring out what it will do in reverse. I'm hoping the Allmand will be more predictable.

The lesson from the Icarus story is not about human failing.
It is a lesson about the limitations of wax as an adhesive.
If you have an engineering problem solve it.

Re: backing allmand 31

Hi There,

I also replied to your other post. I was out on one Saturday that I hope to be the new owner of. The skipper used neutral alot... Took it slow and had no issues. Thing to remember is with the long shoal keel, the turning moment is farther aft than a boat with a deep fin keel. I saw this as being a wider radius, just plan for it. If your in tight quarters... Use dock help as needed.
