Re: Sailnet has new owners

I've seen forums where there are ads between posts, but if you contribute ($10/$20/$30) there was no ads, all three were donations since you received no more or less at any price. There was also one more forum that you can see if you are a 'member' That forum (on a site of mostly men) the discussions mostly posted pictures of women... not that anyone in sailing would be sexist ;-)

Re: Sailnet has new owners

Firefox adblocker seems to have taken care of the problem for me. Thanks Donna!

Here's another unfortunate development - unless you're logged in, you now have to watch an add to search the forum. Looks like things are starting to lean in the wrong direction around here...

Re: Sailnet has new owners

I think we can't realistically expect nothing to change. The new owners, I'm assuming, didn't buy the site to lose money. Unless we want a pay site like some others, we're going to have to suck it up and deal with ads. We can't have it both ways.

And unless I'm missing something, I kinda don't see a problem with wanting people to register and have to view an ad if they choose not to.

Re: Sailnet has new owners

I say the new owners should do whatever they think is in their best interest. Of course, so will the consumers. That's capitalism and I love it.

Mark here, one of the techs at VS. We use a product called "SolveMedia", which is a captcha to test if you are a human when performing certain actions. Those include searches, and registration. That product uses both standard images to test, and it occasionally uses an ad to test. To confirm, though, members never see those. If you are a member of the site, the ad layout is always minimalistic as we don't need to test if you're a human (unless you're a zombie, at which point we'd probably want to test you repeatedly :P). My walking dead joke of the week.

It's "ad blocker," you illiterate twit.*

* Sorry, couldn't let it pass, lest one of the hand-wringing civility-claiming hypocrites point out the inconsistency.
