Web Pages *Way* Too Wide

What has SN done that its web pages are now so flippin' wide that a page can't fit on a 1024x768 (laptop) display? Makes reading posts somewhat inconvenient, having to scroll back-and-forth.

Jim

Jim,

I see what you mean. Not sure if this is just a temporary glitch, or a real change. When I hit "reply" to make this post, the page temporarily went back to normal size, but then bounced up to plus-size again.

Not a problem on my monitor (20"), but I can see how it might be on laptops, etc. We'll ask Admin about it.

I figured out what it is. It's the banner advert near the top of the page. Had to disable Flash and block images from a site to make it go away.

You might suggest to the Powers That Be that they vet adverts for a reasonable size before putting them up. I'm not one of those that tends to block adverts by default, because I realize that's whence many sites derive their operating income. But when they become too annoying, as this one is, they have to go. That does neither the advertiser nor the site any good.

Thanks,
Jim

Same thing as when a user posts an oversized picture, I reckon.

Yup.

I know that some web forum software can resize those on-the-fly. Maybe newer versions of vBulletin? Maybe it's a vBulletin add-on? Sure wish SN did that.

As it is, what I tend to do is block images from the site upon which the offending image is located. Since these are often sites other people use, eventually I'm not seeing anybody's pictures. Oh well...

Jim

A few days ago, the Wells Fargo expanding ad was located above the SailNet banner on the top of the page. Now, it's been moved to just below the UserCP toolbar. Seems to me that it behaved much better in the original location (above the SailNet banner). Sure, it still expanded and collapsed vertically, but at least it didn't stetch the entire website horizontally... Perhaps the admins could just return it to its original position?

Got an amazing (but oversized) image of the Gulf Oil Spill site at night from a member who works a vessel that was passing the site, on page 80 of the Gulf Oil Spill thread, that resized the page to about twice a normal screen's width. Can moderators modify the tag to rescale pics within posts, or does SailNet not give you those sorts of privs?
