What's with the big ads

Is it just me? Lately every so often a big ad comes across the screen and blocks all the postings. Not even sailing related. The site is getting slow too. What's up?

I will say this...Google ads are extremely effective. Virtually every search I've done in the past couple of months is resulting in very targeted ads (Aston Martin, BMW, Beneteau, New York Museum of Art, Hogan's Heros, etc.). It's spooky how much they know.

I've noticed a decline in the speed that these pages open. The ad on the left appears first, in the middle of the page and just hangs there for a bit. It finally moves to the left and then the posts appear. Rather annoying.

I am having the same problems. I know the age of my computer is a factor, but I am not experiencing the same slow motion action on other sites. Also, it seems to be worse when certain ads are on the screen.

Incidentally, I use Firefox.

No, it's not. For that reason I'm generally loath to block adverts. In fact: Prior to their effect on the site's usability here, I'd never done so, ever, for any site. But this site's owners/administrators/whomever seem remarkably adept at finding and using the most God-awful, CPU-pegging, browser-hanging, page-display-slowing, and sometimes down-right obnoxious adverts and advert servers on the 'net. Finally, when it got to "either do something about this or abandon Sailnet," I installed Adblock Plus.

Now I hardly ever see any adverts here anymore.

I'll note again: Of the (counting...) six, currently, sites I visit regularly, and the three or four I visit occasionally, and the additional half dozen or so I visit even more occasionally: Only on Sailnet, only on Sailnet, have I ever experienced such problems and have I ever seen such wide-spread complaints on such a frequent basis.

Jim

Again, I know my computer is partly to blame, but I am not having this slow motion problem on other sites. And if the "Furuno Winter Rebate" add comes on my screen, the computer freezes. I just get off the site!
