Charleston Bermuda Race: May 21, 2011

CHARLESTON, SC ― OnDeck US, in partnership with the South Carolina Maritime Foundation (SCMF) and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC), is pleased to announce May 21, 2011 as the official start of the biennial Charleston Bermuda Race. Yachtsmen from all ports are invited to take part in this sailboat event and embrace the challenge of the 777 mile course from Charleston Harbor to Bermuda. Sailors with boats of at least 30 feet in length have a choice of competing in one of several divisions: Racing, Cruising - Spinnaker, Cruising - Non Spinnaker, Double-Handed or Multi-Hull.

Charleston and Bermuda share a rich maritime history and continue to strengthen their commercial and cultural connections. Started during the 1990's, this race promises to carry on the tradition that leads sailors from the cobblestone streets and picturesque waterfront of Charleston Harbor to the beautiful Atlantic islandscape of Bermuda. The Charleston Bermuda Race start on May 21 marks the culmination of several SCMF hosted waterfront events including the Charleston Harbor Fest, Velux 5 Oceans Solo Challenge Race Village activities and start of its final sprint to LaRochelle, France.

OnDeck has recently established operations in the US with the opening of its first base in Charleston, South Carolina. OnDeck US is poised to move ahead with a long term commitment to developing a well rounded sailing operation offering all levels of sailboat instruction from basic to advanced racing clinics, a wide range of offshore and racing opportunities, skippered charters, yacht management and corporate team building events.

The SCMF is a public nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that owns and operates the tall ship Spirit of South Carolina. The Foundation’s mission is to create opportunities for life-changing experiences resulting in leaders for tomorrow’s communities.

The RBYC was first established in 1844 and has become well known for hosting world class sailing events welcoming sailors from around the globe. Situated on Albuoy's Point in Hamilton, Bermuda, the club and marina combine to create a perfect venue for docking and post-race shoreside activities.
