Kevin Farrar of Farrar Sails, discusses with Pelagic Sailing Club Members and
Guests the "Technology of How Sails Are Made Today"
From an apprentice sailmaker working at Van Zandt Sails making top one-design sails for competitive classes including 505's, 470's, 420's, interclub Dinghy's, Penquins and Thistles to owning his own loft (mid 70's), Kevin Farrar has produced sails for one-designs, windsurfers, larger boats, and racing boats. In 1998 Farrar Sails made the jump to AutoCad software and invested in a Gerber Scientific Sail Cutting table. Another sail design change happened in 2010 with the addition of Azure Project software which gives his company the same computing power that the largest loft has in designing sails today. Kevin is also a measurer at World Championships in which he just returned from the International 420 Class European in Tavira Portugal as the chief measurer. Closer to home, last summer took Kevin to Little America's Cup "C" class cat in Newport, and his sails have been seen on the late Ted Kennedy's boat.
