Sailnet App for Android - Permissions

I just went to install the Sailnet App on my Android phone.

According to the permissions for this application it can:

- determine the phone number and serial number of my phone and who I'm calling
- take pictures and videos with my camera and collect images my camera is seeing

Are these "features" for this app really necessary?? I won't install this app as it stands.

Does anyone else have feelings about this? Am I just being paranoid?

Just for the record - the APP is made by Vbulletin.com - we have ZERO control over what it does and does not ask for. It's a generic Vbulletin App that is stylized for our forum.

You may register your privacy concerns at www.vbulletin.com

If you do not not wish to agree to those terms your option using any android smart phone is to simply use the built in web browser and access the forums that way. I use both - depends on my mood.

Re: Sailnet App for Android - Permissions

I will add that the only alternative is an application which YOU must purchase called Tap-A-Talk available for Ihpones and Android devices.

It would require Sailnet to install the TapATalk add-on and then you could access Sailnet through the TapATalk application. The downside here is that YOU PAY $2.99 for the application instead of Sailnet paying (which we have to license the App from Vbulletin for Iphone and Android) and to install the TapATalk app on your smart phone THEY require you to agree to all of the same requirements as does the Sailnet App that we supply for free.

Re: Sailnet App for Android - Permissions

Jeff ... thanks for the info ....

in looking at MOST of my installed apps I now see that these types of permissions are pretty common.

In googling for more information about permissions ... I've also found information that basically says "make sure you trust where the application is coming from.

and ... I trust Sailnet .... so I'll give the APP a try ....

Tap talk would be worth 10 times the price too. it is very good, occasionally gets a buggy update but that is normally fixed within a day or so. Do you have TapTalk enabled on your site? I did not see it last time I searched. I find the Vbullletin app almost unusable.

how so?

I've used Tap A Talk on other sites and it's very buggy - even the paid for version.

I keep getting force closes (has happened at least 6 or 8 times in the last week). Having to log on every time I open the app is tiresome. It would also be nice to be able to select the forums to open in new posts, at least to avoid the off topic/politics. The early versions of TapATalk was buggy, but has been quite stable for a while. I like having the option of several forums under one interface.

I would like to add that links to YouTube videos do not work. Clicking on the link takes you to a YouTube screen that states that the video could not be found. This happens regardless of whether you allow the link to go to the android YouTube app or YouTube in a browser window. Also photos that users attach to their posts cannot be opened. Clicking on an attachment brings up a blank window. I have experienced these issues on various android phones and on different carriers.

I've never experienced a single forced close and I use it more than anyone and there are no online reports of any errors that are tracked.

are you running version 1.2 or 1.3 - 1.3 is the latest version and was brought online last week.

Since it was an easy install. We added tap-a-talk support this morning.

to find Sailnet on Tap-a-Talk enter
Code:
www.sailnet.com/forums
and you'll be able to add Sailnet.

regards
