Chat alternatives, irc? #sailing?

Hi sailnet tech mods,

I've been using the chat with folks for a few months.. and it's kinda buggy.

Often reads as "full" when it might not be, has problems with rapid typing, tends to crash my browsers with buggy javascript, etc..

I wonder if you are re-inventing the wheel a bit with this server-side chat implementation. Why doesn't sailnet set up an IRC channel, and then pop up a java or javascript window to it from the forum page. That would keep the community here aware of it and keep browser-based access, but would enable more traffic, more chat client options, and would move any maintenance issues to the IRC space, which is more mature.

Just my $.02.
