CAL 2-46 window replacement

I am replacing the saloon windows in my CAL 2-46 but am having trouble removing the plexiglass from the frame. There is a 1/4" spacer that I believe is a plastic channel that the plexiglass fits into before it is fitted into the frame. Does anyone who has replaced these windows have any pointers on how to get the glas out without destroying the 'spacer' or frame?

Just a thought, but why not simply use 1/4" thicker plexi and forget about the spacer?
