Doug Sabbag Guest Speaker at Pelagic Sailing Club May 24th!

On May 24th, Doug Sabbag will talk about what happened in the Summer of 2011 that left Doug and his wife a little more shaken up than planned. The plan was to leave Boston aboard their 50ft ketch (Triumph) and head for Europe. Unfortunately, just southeast of Nova Scotia, Doug and his wife had to be rescued. First-hand experience taught them about the mistakes they made along the way and more importantly when they should have called for assistance versus when the original call was made. Doug will share with us what went wrong on his trip, solutions he came up with, and what happened during his rescue.

Pelagic Sailing Club meets at Savin Hill Yacht Club, Dorchester, MA, on the second floor at 6:30pm for social hour and pizza, 7:30pm for meeting, 8:00pm guest speaker.

I will look forward to meeting as many of you as possible, while sharing the details and some pictures, of the events which led to our rescue in the open ocean.

We are elated to have survived and pleased to therefore be able to share what we have learned.

Hope to see you there!
Doug

Hey Doug,

I was not able to attend your presentation at the Pelagic Sailing Club.. I was wondering; how did it go from your perspective?

Thanks!

Well, sadly it was more entertainment than actual valuable advice.

So, I have proposed to Robin, the co-ordinator there, that I do another presentation where I would / could focus more on the fact that it is very important to first know what to do in your own rescue, and then take more of an active role in directing the actions toward that.

Nevertheless, the audience was full of questions, and hopefully, if they learned nothing else, it was to not call for assistance unless there really is no alternative.

Maybe this is not really news to others...

Well, though they might well all know that much better than the very few unenlightened folks who don't, at least these all knowing sailors were provided pictures of some specifics of what can happen when you bring a 900 foot tanker and a 50 foot sailboat together.

Which should further cement what everyone already knows....
