Ammyy SCAM!!

Earlier today while working I got a call on our home phone from someone with a thick Indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft Technical Support and claiming he was calling me because our computer system had "Reported" various malfunctions and intrusions. When I asked him how he got our phone number he claimed it was given to Microsoft when we "Activated" our copy of Windows (which I knew was BS because we never give our our home phone number out; because our number was different when we activated our current systems; and, because our home computers were set up by our MIS guy from my office, at my office, who didn't have our home number anyway).

This guy went through a bunch of BS claiming my Windows Activation "License" was due to expire and that I needed to renew it by down-loading a program known as Ammyy.exe from the internet so he could "fix my computer remotely".

"In your dreams" I said and hung up. I Googled Ammyy.? and came up with tons of references to a Scam that allows these characters to compromise unsuspecting peoples' systems and harvest passwords, credit account information and the like. Since I had not heard of this scam before I thought it would be worth my mentioning it here in case anyone else gets a similar call/inquiry.

FWIW...

Sometimes they say your computer or windows reported a problem and they have to fix it.

Oh, I sure wish they'd call me! I'd love to get as much information from them as I could, note the number, then tell them I run Linux and don't keep Windows on my computer! Maybe I could get him to Skype me, just so I could see his face.

Re: Ammyy SCAM!!

I get them regularly. There have been several new reports about this scam.

They started over a year.

Re: Ammyy SCAM!!

Thanks for the heads up! I might have had to play along and just make up a credit card number to piss him off later.

People like that and the ones that create viruses are pure scum.

Re: Ammyy SCAM!!

Thanks for posting that. It helps to hear about these scams just to keep everyone on guard. When the phone rings it's too easy to be caught off guard. One way to avoid taking a chance is to call back to a customer service number you know to be legit. Even when a credit card company company calls to verify something or alert you to suspicious activity it is a good idea to call them back via a known customer service number because you do not really know who is calling you when you receive a cold call.

Re: Ammyy SCAM!!

You might also try to get information that you can pass along to the police. What they are doing is criminal.

There's also a scam where they call you and tell you "This is a verification call" then take a guess at which credit card you use. They say "you are a VISA customer right", and if you say yes then they want to verify your number, name, address, expiration date, security number on the back. I usually give them all bogus numbers... keeps them happy.
I usually start with my name being James Bond, and take it from there.

Re: Ammyy SCAM!!

Unbelievably, these AirHoles called us again at 0730 claiming that they had received a message from Microsoft customer service that we had an issue with our version of Excel that needed be handled "right away". My respone--after putting the guy on hold for 30+ minutes--is not reprintable.

Re: Ammyy SCAM!!

Lately I have been telling them to Google "Microsoft scam" because their picture is on that page. One bozo seemed to believe me; they must be more naive than the folks they call.
