Heading South - departure time?

Been a long time sponge on this site and learned a lot over the years most recently with the tutorial on how to bed deck fittings (particularly for the mechanically challenged). Making plans for my first long cruise going from Oyster bay to Hilton head this Fall From those of you who have made this trip any insights on the best time of the season to start heading south? Not sure whether I will be going outside or taking the ICW - will depend on which of my sailing buddies will be making all or part of the trip. Realizing I need to be mindful of weather windows and my hope of arriving in HH around Oct 20 suspect the departure time should be last week in Sept. Thoughts?

Sounds about right to me. Many sailors seem to time their trip south with the Annapolis show, which is Oct 4th to the 8th this year.

Of course, it's also hurricane season, so weather will dictate timing.

The NJ coast seems to often frustrate snowbirds. If you can get a benign window (about 24 hours) with something other than the prevailing SW winds it would make the trip a little easier.
Otherwise you're beating into the prevailing winds.

Once inside, barring any serious weather you can usually make continous progress south.

From Cape May, you have the option of staying inside ( Delaware bay to Chesapeake) or remaining offshore, with the option of coming into Norfolk. As you say, weather, winds..crew capabilities, vessel, tend to dictate schedule.

The Annapolis Boat Show is a major convenience. Many insurance companies have a hurricane box that keeps boats North of Norfolk VA until 1 November.

Re: Heading South - departure time?

What do you mean by "cruise"? And do you have a time frame you have to fit into (can't leave until, have to be there by)?

You can go outside and just get there, or go inside and see things. What is it you want to do?
