From the comments that new people make in chat, I truly believe that they are still reading the forum. After all, that's why they signed up. You don't know about the chat room until you become a member.

I have no stats to support it, but my gut says that the number of eyes the chat takes away from the store and advertisers is minimal.

In the beginning, this was my concern as well. As often as possible, when it isn't a simple one-off question, I direct the member to post the question in the forum and provide a direct link to the proper area. Most of the regulars do the same. I've checked and almost every time I do see the question show up in the forum. Often new members ask "How do I post in the forum?" and whoever is around will provide instructions. If we start discussing a forum topic, a link is provided (and I get nudged when I forget).

Chat has also become an area where new people lurk, take in the lighthearted banter and more than one has said "You guys are fun. I'll be back." And they are and they visit the forum judging by subsequent comments as well as postings.

I guess due to my own initial concerns and the strong anti-chat feelings from some long-time members, I am doubly sensitive to how it impacts (or not) the overall forum and probably spend more time than I need to thinking about it (and defending it).

But rest assured, the folks who are regulars know the value of the forum and make sure new people to the chat room don't make chat their beginning and end of their SailNet experience.

That would be interesting. Admin: I'd like a "Pitch Fork" and a "Torch" button next to my "Boot" button, please.

We don't have an "Off Topic" section of course, but chat is still part of the forum and subject to forum rules. When something is posted that goes against forum rules (advertisement, spam, etc.) and I was not logged on I usually receive a head's up by PM from whomever was there (sometimes multiple PMs if it was really bad). If I am logged on I can click either my "Boot" or "Ban" buttons to instantly remove them from the chat and then go into their profile to deal with them. Or send a PM. Whatever is appropriate. I also do a quick scroll back to when I exited last to see what I missed and who might need their knuckles smacked.

As Andrew said, he was joking. Probably a furball caught in his throat.

Seriously though, you really want two moderators hanging around the chat? You'd have to come up with more nicknames and references to the color red.

Personally, I'm glad it's gone. At least I no longer have to keep turning it off when it randomly reactivates itself.

Can I interpret that to mean that politics, war and religion are verboten in the chat room?

I can't say that those topics are never brought up but somehow it just works out that they are rarely discussed. I don't know how to explain it. It's just a different atmosphere. No one really cares what anyone else thinks about politics, war or religion. Especially when we get 10, 15 people in at the same time, no one topic is discussed long enough for it to escalate into anything dangerous and it when it seems like it might, one of us steps in. Although, last summer they spent at least a few hours turning it into a computer geek fest.

You mean "lady in red" and Lady Chatterly would not apply?
