My A4 runs great, so I have no complaints on that end. However, when I push the throttle all the way down, it actually kills the engine. Is that the proper setting, or should throttling all the way down to the stop just leave the engine at idle?

The throttle in the cockpit just pulls and pushes the throttle cable which, in turn, pulls and pushes the throttle lever on the side of the engine. If that little lever on the side of the engine goes all the way to off, then no gas to the carb and no fire in the piston.
