Agree with NorfolkRagbagger, the Reversing Gear video does a very good job of removing the mysteries of this exceedingly simple mechanism. You can find it on this page. Also, anybody using an A4 shouldn't be without the Moyer Marine (A4) Service and Overhaul Manual, on this page.
