I second the question... what's wrong with the A4? Mine starts every time, I can hand start it if the starter fails, it runs smoother than a diesel, and it is very easy to maintain.

I saw that one and liked it but it is a little expensive for me. I do like the idea of having a brand spanking new engine in the boat, but that seems too expensive and difficult based on the info here. I think I'll try to find a boat with the diesel already installed as you suggested. A lot f different people with different experience levels will be using the boat which makes me nervous about the gas engine.

a lot of people using anything is reason for concern! There are many boats out there with diesels you will surely love too but, if you really love the boat your looking at and want a diesel it really is your decision to make. Others have done it. You can reduce costs by doing allot of the work yourself, it's not rocket science. I'd say the skill level is equal to DIY 5 on a scale of 10.

Yes, the A4 is a good engine that you could also use until you have the funds to do the conversion later on.
