Atomic 4 replacement with a diesel, estimated cost?

I'm interested in a Douglas 31 (like an Allied Luders 33 at some level but made in Canada) and would want to replace the 1978 rebuilt Atomic 4 with a diesel hopefully of similar horse power. Does anyone have suggestions for what kind of engine would work best, where to get a good quote in New England for the replacement and how much this might cost including the engine? Any other suggestions on how to make this more affordable (like things I can do myself) would be appreciated, anticipating a big price tag might make the boat unaffordable.

You are looking at a $7000-10000 price tag. You can buy a lot of gas for that amount. If the A4 was rebuilt, why not just keep it. Great motors.

We have a BETA 14 Hp in my friends C&C 35 as and A4 drop in your boat is most likely a good bit more heavy but if the A4 moved it the BETA should do fine if not they sell a nice 3 cylinder unit

BUT i gotta say its far from a drop in other than the motor mounts are pretty close and its gonna cost well above 10K with all the new things you would need

Doesn't Universal have a direct fit?........i2f

Beta Marine specializes in Atomic 4 replacements;

The supposed "drop-ins" really only match the A-4 footprint. They are all taller and will require a new, and larger, exhaust system. I replaced the A-4 in my Tartan 30 and I needed a new bed. exhaust sytem and cover. The cost for these was not a major part of the total cost to repower, about $10,000. I now have a 3YSM 30 Yanmar that always starts and always runs well. A large investment, to be sure, But it has been great for the peace of mind.

This is great information. Thanks. Has anyone out there installed one of the Beta Marine engines and new exhaust as an A4 replacement themselves or done most of the work? The full service install at $10k or so puts the boat out of reach financially. Wondering if I shouldn't just wait for something that has been repowered with diesel already. Whatever boat I end up with, I'm hoping she comes with a newer motor or I get it cheap enough to replace the motor to keep my wife happy.

And now the inevitable "why": Why do you want to do this?

The Atomic Bomb is a great engine. Yes, it's gasoline, but proper maintanence, a look see before statring, blower, and cheap tune ups will give you a reliable engine that's trouble free........i2f

Or, you could buy one with a diesel already installed:
