impeller issues
 
changed it back in June, hadnt been changed in a year or 2 according to the PO -- it had quite a bit of 'trash' from it and we had to pick it all out but are certain we got it all, the new run has run fine

until the other day, it appears as though it needs replacing, will pull in the next day or two to make sure

the boat did run over a shoal, could I have sucked up, sand and mud trying to unstick her and that created havoc with the impeller?

we are freshwater sailors and new (obviously HA!) so I'm looking for advice here

it was not throwing out as much water as normal is why i suspect the impeller is the issure

Depending on your engine, you may want to open up the heat exchanger on the end where the raw water enters to check for any debris.

I always start at the beginning and work through the system. Intake on the outside of hull, sea ****, sea strainer, belt that drives the pump, impeller, exchanger.

I am going to assume that you are raw water cooled (your boat actually) since the early CAL 30's came that way and your boat is in fresh water anyway. It is possible that you picked up some crud that is blocking your water intake or that actually made it's way to the impellor (a filter placed before the impellor is a good idea). Shut your raw water valve and check the impellor. If it's good then pull the raw water hose and open the valve to see if you have a good flow. It's easy to suck stuff up into the thru-hull. I've sucked up small fish before and it can play heck with the water flow as well as with the fish. I added a tee to the top of my seacock with a plug in the top. This way it gives me a straight shot to clear any foriegn materials that get sucked up. By the way, I've owned a 1965 CAL 30 for about 14 or 15 years and I really love the boat (a link to pictures can be found in the link asking about the CAL 30's).

There is a small grease cap on the pump that is out of sight out of mind and the shaft will wear through the bronze over time VS the new style pump with a two roller bearing support

You should check how tight the pump shaft is with the inpeller out as mine got so lose it was killing inpellers
