Adding a staysail to my 473 (2002, hull 78)

We're beginning to consider a rig modification as we plan for a 12 month cruise of the western Carribbean. Does any one have any experience adding a staysail?

Hi Craig,

Sorry for the late response.

I have a 473, don't have the inner forestay option ( may put it on though)
But I do have the diagram and photo's from beneteau. Doesn't look to hard to do and would be worth it if you kept it simple.
Send me an email via this net and I forward you on the details.
Cheers
Jason Maude

Hi Jason, I know this is an old post but just I happened across the thread about this topic. I'm in the process of buying a 2003 model. Did you ever complete the mod? Do you have any info on what is involved? Thanks for any guidance.
Jeff

Jeff/Jason,

I just bought a 2006 and am considering an inner forestay for a heavy jib. Can either of you send me the plans you used or are considering. Email is conwaysailors (at) gmail.com.

I help a friend install one on a 42S. I was at first skeptical installing a staysail on a in mast main, but B sail all was good. They liked the idea of using the windlass bulkhead to fasten the chain plate. We removed the winch, installed the plate and added longer bolts with little modification. You'll need a rigger to install topside of the furler fitting, just above the spreaders. Needs to be drilled and tapped, but B says okay. I'd give them a call to make sure your specific model and supplied equipment will allow this modification without changing the mast or something drastic.

Re: Adding a staysail to my 473 (2002, hull 78)

Hi all, discovered your forum though Google. I also am looking to fit a staysail onto my Boat. This is a 44CC but I doubt whether there would be any great differencies between how it is accomplished.

Would greatly appreciate any diagramms/photos that anybody has.

Many thanks
Ian

Re: Adding a staysail to my 473 (2002, hull 78)

Sorry to intrude on this thread, but I am looking to buy a 473, and would be interested in owners experience of these lovely yachts....the good and the bad. Is there structurally weak areas to look for? How well do they sail? I am chartering one in the med mid year to get some hands on experience of the boat. Has anyone bought one from charter companies such as Moorings? Did the boat meet expectations and were the Moorings guys good to deal wit?
Thanks for your help and advice!
Davealso
