Beneteau 445

Thinking of purchasing a nice Beneteau 445 ( 1993).
Any thought on the boat? I will be using it for liveaboard and possibly crossing the Atlantic.
Just wondering if the design of the boat will be able to take crossings

Great as a live aboard, but you better make sure all systems are in good shape before taking this coastal cruiser offshore. Many have done it on a large Beneteau (this boat may have been France built and come over on it's own bottom...not sure) but please respect the oceans.

What would be a good offshore beneteau in the 40/45 foot range?

Beneteaus are great for what they're designed for...sailing coastal. That, to me, means island hopping but not really sailing more than a couple of days offshore, or out of weekly forecast range. I really wouldn't take any non-modified Beneteau on an extended cruise with lots of offshore time...just not it's design intent. Of course, there will be those that will say you can circumnavigate on a Beneteau, and will point to blogs of people doing it or show offshore certifications. It's a matter of doing the journey in a more suitable and comfortable, safer vessel.

Think of it this way. You can tow a 5000 lb trailer in a Toyota suv on paper...per the manual. But most people that tow trailers daily have ugly pickup trucks...why is that? Because a pickup truck will do the job with less drama day in day out.

Beneteau is the suv of the sailing world...a lot of boat for the buck, but design compromises made for suburban comfort vs commercial hauling. Make sense?

Another thing...your 1993 B445 is now 17-18 years old.

How sturdy are things like the standing rigging. Is the engine original and tired? What about the condition of the rudder stock? How conditioned are the portlight seals and such...do they leak or weep as it stands? How reliable will your electronics be?

If you can inspect this boat and say "Yes, I've inspected all these items on the boat, and not only are they in good shape, but many have been upgraded beyond what the factory provided"....then and only then would I even consider taking a Beneteau across oceans.
