Oceanis 45 saildrive questions

I am new to this forum, and I am not sure if this question was already asked, but I could not find it with Google nor forum search, so here it goes:

My new Oceanis 45 with Yanmar saildrive with fixed prop
is making rather loud whining noise from saildrive housing
when sailing with the gearbox is shifted to neutral (per SD manual).
Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

I am actually thinking about upgrading my fixed prop to maxprop,
but I think I need to diagnose the noise problem first.
Do you have any suggestions about the size and type of the
maxprop if I will finally go this route?

I don't know if that's normal for a sail drive or not. I have a fixed prop that will give some noise occasionally as it spins in neutral while sailing but it's from the prop in the water. I don't hear shaft noises. This might be a bearing issue.

You might want to repost this in the gear and maintenance part of the forum to get a bigger group to read this as it might not be Beneteau specific.

Re: Oceanis 45 saildrive questions
I have a Oceanis 41 with the sail drive and a factory installed 3 blade folding prop. No noise at all.

Fwiw, boat's nicely fast under sail and no prop walk around the dock.

Re: Oceanis 45 saildrive questions
I have the Oceanis B45 with a saildrive. Before reading the fine print on the MaxProp manual mine did whine. The solution was to momentarily put it in reverse after engine shutdown. The whining I did hear was because the saildrive was spinning in neutral.

Just for testing, put the gear in reverse to see if the whining stops. I believe the Beneteau policy for fixed props is to leave the drive in reverse, not positive though. Your dealer should check it out and advise.

Re: Oceanis 45 saildrive questions
FYI - the MaxProp that I have is a Gen II Classic 4 blade @ 22 degrees pitch. The MaxProp folks are very familiar with the Beneteau Oceanis 45, there are three B45's in the Seattle area with that setup. Have your dealer call Tori at Signature Yachts (my dealer), she can hook you up with the right folks.

I get around 8kts boat speed at 2600 RPM

The noise is typical. The prop is continuing to spin from the movement of the boat. As was mentioned by 'kellysails' above I shift into reverse, this was shown to me by the dealer captain. I myself am looking at an Autoprop. I've been told Maxprops that have been in use for a few years are now having to be rebuilt because the gears are wearing out. You should also consider Autostream, they have Stainless Steel gears and are apparently easier to adjust.

The OP does not have a feathering or folding prop so no noise is expected right? There is also no point in putting briefly in reverse in that case. There is guidance (yanmar manual and sticker next to throttle) to leave transmission in neutral when sailing at higher speeds. Everything in the thread makes sense for non-fixed props, some good ideas of alternatives there too.

I'm now leaning toward a Flexofold based on a link to a review in another thread. It's also quite affordable. I would love to know what the specs are on my stock prop, it's like pulling teeth. I may have to wait for haul out.
