I like the suggestions so far.
Along the lines of the Schock 35 suggestion, and if you can consistently muster 5-7 crew for racing, you might look at a New York 36 (also built by W.D. Schock and very similar to the 35 but fractionally rigged.)
It's kind of a tricky order though. If it was just for the beer can races, it would be easier to make suggestions. For that, on a budget, I'd maybe look at something like a J-29. But the suggested J30 has a lot more cruisability.
