Blue water cruising

My wife and I are considering cruising around the world for 5-10 years and in preparation for same are now actively looking for a boat 45-50' in lenght and would welcome suggestions. As we will be cruising outside the EU we are looking for a boat with large fuel/water capacity, a skeg-mounted rudder.

As we are currently resident and domiciled in Ireland but palnning to go afar should we consider a boat registered outside the EU (Jersey, Channel Islands, Gibraltar, etc..,) We plan to do a circumnavigation. What are the tax implications when we return from our odyssey?

Any advice appreciated!

If you buy a boat outside of the EU and travel around the world for your 5-10 years you can return to the EU and not have to pay V.A.T. on your "domicile".

If your plan includes serious passage making as well as trans-oceanic journeys, inevitably this list of boats comes up for discussion:

Mahina Expedition - Offshore Cruising Instruction

Most would say it isn't a complete assessment of boats suitable for bluewater cruising, but it is a great resource and more complete than many tid-bits you'll find on the Intraweb. It hasn't been updated since Jan 2008, however...so its due for a refresh.
