Request advice on bare hull on Ches.

Hi Sailnet Community,

I am a new member (and lubber) with a couple of questions.
Saw a post in this thread about GA v. SC tax so I thought to post here.

I have a 53' bare hull ( no deck, no hull ID ) sitting in a marina on the Bay. Foolishly, I had bought it unseen a couple of years ago.

It was advertised as solid but it is cored.
It has 3 gashes below the waterline unadvertised
It was advertised as 18' beam which presented real problems trying to move it over land but it really turned out to be about 15'.

Now the State of VA is requesting tax money and I would like to know if it is taxable and if so, how much tax ( if any ) should expect since I only paid $3500 for it.

As an aside, I had found out online that the Marina had been accused of sinking a boat ( about to be sold ) at the dock. They strike me as not the best of motives.

Finally, if anyone has any movers to recommend perhaps they could email me, should I not abandon the Project altogether.

Thanks,

MFM ( a descendant )

if it is in VA, has ANY value and you have not paid tax on it....You will...unless you can show tax being paid in some other VA locale. And yes you will need documentation or a receipt and you will need to see if the locales "pro-rate" or not.

BTW, some counties in VA are "boat friendly" meaning they do not take you to the cleaners on taxes...others could care less what you pay yearly and charge you dearly.

Northumberland county is friendly, Roanoke City is not...Tax in Roanoke would be over $3K - Yearly, in NU $800 - Yearly...

best of luck

Just another reason why I will never give VA any of my money. I lived there a couple years and couldn't wait to leave!

Good luck man!

In Wa st where I am, you would owe any unpaid sales tax on the 3500. They will want a recipt showing what you paid.

Other states may and will very on there tax laws and how they go about collecting $$$$.

Thanks everyone

for your thoughts. Much appreciated.

May I ad that, if I work things out ... is it OK to ask for a recommendation of
reliable and reasonable over land boat mover ?

I looked briefly at getting it moved via sea to Jacksonville but was quoted ridiculous figures.

I have to agree with tager. The hull is by far the cheapest part of the boat. You're going to spend more cobbling together an albatross than it would cost to go buy a good boat that needs a few projects done. Scuttle it in deep water, and say "what boat??".

Sounds like a good project. A few years and a 200k and you'll be sailing. Assuming you do all the work yourself.

Only 200K?

Maybe possible if you scrounge a bit and do all the work yourself. I was being facetious and don't think it's a logical project for most. The engine and rig alone could easily top 100k. And a 53' hull is a whole lot of cubic area to fill with an interior. 2 years might be optimistic as well on second thought. Here's a link to a 50' "home built" steel boat that took 28 years and isn't totally finished. But she's beautiful though.
