Hello,
I am considering purchasing a 1979 34' Irwin Citation (
1979 Irwin Citation sailboat for sale in New York ) does anyone have any personal experience with the 34' Irwin Citation?
I will include the specs for this specific boat as soon as the owner sends them to me. Does this look like a decent first live aboard?
Much thanks!
PS if you know of any other good boats (30'-40') available in the NYC area for under $20,000 please let me know.

Overview:
The Irwin Citation is a fairly fast, stable and comfortable family cruiser that was designed for coastal and inland cruising. I would not rate this as a blue water, ocean crossing yacht. I say this as she is a modestly constructed, production boat made in the USA and does not have the weight or rig one would associate with extended deep ocean voyaging. So for those of you who have inquired about crossing oceans, I would suggest you look at a Valiant or other world cruisers. That said, for a boat built in 1979, she is in good shape with many years of sailing ahead. This boat has been perfect sized for my family of 4 and is easily single handed. I sail single handed more than half the time and her size and weight feels just right. She balances and tracks well on most points of sail. I think this boat is priced right and represents her age and better-than-market priced by comparison. There is no recent survey.
Motivation to sell: I have the boating disease - I have my eye on a 40 footer and I am not going to own 2 boats!
Upgrades: I have done almost all the upgrading and maintenance on her for the last 9 years. This has included 6 new opening ports, new fixed side windows, new water pump, new bilge pump, new VHF radio, new cockpit cushions, new bimini top, sail canvas and cockpit curtains, 2-part painted decks, new running rigging, new radio antenna, interior oil lamps, interior painting, varnishing, plumbing including sanitary hoses and galley faucet. There are numerous items set right over the last years that are too numerous to mention as tinkering with this boat is my hobby.
Walkthrough:
Forward Cabin: Chain locker in the bow with access from the V berth. V berth with infill, duel reading lights, overhead hatch, 2 opening ports, hanging locker and 3 drawers. Water tank is under the V.
Head: Pressure water basin and shower, opening port, overhead light with red night vision option switch, electric toilet with anti-siphon, storage cabinet and 2 drawers. Towel rack, shelves and mirror. Two-way switch for holding tank or overboard discharge in lower cabinet.
Main Cabin: The collapsible dining table sleeps 2, sleep 1 on settee, 1 on aft pilot berth. There is a full navigation table with chart storage, additional compass and VHF radio. Dining table seats 5 comfortably, with storage behind the seats. There is ample lighting throughout with 2 opening ports and additional overhead hatch. Galley has 3 burner propane stove with oven, deep sink with gooseneck faucet, big 4.2 cu. ft. top-loading ice box and dish storage. Pantry storage is in the countertop and behind counter, with an additional aft facing opening port in galley. All 6 port and starboard opening ports were replaced in 2008 along with new side fixed windows.
Cockpit: BIG cockpit for a 34 foot boat with seating for 7. New cockpit cushions in 2006. Pedestal mounted wheel and engine controls and new 2006 binnacle compass, fold-up table and 6 glass-holding rack. Engine access through lifting floor panel is a unique and wonderful feature. You can lover yourself entirely into the engine compartment to access the engine, filters, packing gland, wiring, storage and the steering mechanism. Enough room for a small generator, or additional fuel tank if desired.
On Deck: Bow pulpit with port and starboard lights. Anchor locker in deck with drains holding a big danforth, 15 feet of chain and 150 feet of new rode. Deck-steeped aluminum mast with deck lights, 2 halyard winches and new 2009 halyards. Stainless rigging in good order last inspected in spring 2009. Centerboard controls on cabin top with winch. Two winches in cockpit for headsail handling. New tan Sunbrella bimini on stainless frame, sail cover, jib bag and cockpit curtains all new in spring 2009. Stern pulpit comes with stainless barbeque, new flag and stern light. There is a stern mounted swim ladder that folds up."
