As others have mentioned, do not buy without a full report from a reputable surveyor. What may seem like a big discount now, can wind up costing big bucks later on.

I also echo the statement that everything is negotiable. Remember, you want the boat. You don't need the boat.

I know some one who has purchased an ex private sv cheap, the boat has been sitting on the hard for 3 years, the new owner has spent a lot of time and money to get it up to scratch (horses for courses ) all depends on the individual how much time and money you have.

If your looking for a great boat click on the link above or check out Dufour Gibsea 43 on the Tui marine brokerage Exclusive In-House Brokerage Offices

Would someone with a previous experience give me some advice and tips about what is negotiable, what is not, by how much etc..... Delivery, US registration etc...
For example, they tell me they cannot put new sails for the price.
Thank you.
Bon Vent !

sails

I forgot to mention, a sail maker with 40 years experience looked at my sails and said they have approx 4 years left in them.

Another comment about a diver:
I have chartered many boats from many different charter companies in Adriatic.
About 90% of them have a regular diver check on return. Every time. No exception. You simply do not get the deposit returned until the diver surfaces and gives a "thumb up" for the boat.
Adriatic east coast = mostly solid rock.
So it really depends of charter company and on the area.

And a comment about charter boat specification:
When I compared a regular and "Sunsail specified" Beneteau Oceanic 423 back in 2005 there were about 70 modification made for Sunsail in the factory compared to regular production line boats.
Most of them were in the area of easier maintenance and stronger elements used.
Sunsail knows the boats are missuses for 5 years and they do not want things to break. It costs them time to repair = lost revenues.
They also replace the sails during the use - so sails are not 5 year sold, but usually 2 to 3 years old.
Part of wear and tear is UV sun degradation, and corrosion and aging of material. So a 10 years older private boat may suffer osmosis, UV degradation, problems with electric wires, hoses and other bad things accumulating in 15 years.

I am not trying to say the 5YO ex charter boat is better then the same model 5 years old private boat, I am saying that for xxxk$ you can get a bigger, and newer boat.

There is a very big difference regarding location of the charter boat.
I saw Sunsail boats going out of charter in Adriatic which were almost as new, and I saw many 2 years old in tropic which were beaten to death.
Cold climate rules: no mildew, little UV damage, shorter session ...

What is phase-out and why do some boats do it and others do not?

Phase-out is the term used for the charter company returning the boat to the owner. The contract between the two stipulates that the boat be returned in a given condition and with a given amount of "fair wear and tear"; the phase-out is always done but sometimes the owner makes the charter company fix/repair/replace more and sometimes less.

Rusty - g'day, I lived in Sydney for a bit and seriously entertained buying and sailing a boat to Oz as the prices there are quite steep. Apart from the buerocratic hassle and taxation it is a looong way from the Caribbean. Sunsail has fleets in the Whitsundays, Polynesia, Maldives and Seychelles; it would be worth checking out their pricing as the return trip home is going to be a lot shorter.
The BVI has the biggest selection of ex-charter boats, but other islands are also good (St. Martin, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad for example) for finding used boats at fair prices. Florida is just a short "hop" further considering the distance to Oz and has a huge selection of boats.
