Hunter 31 Questions

Hi...looking at buying a H 31. Survey says there's a problem with the mast support in the cabin and it should be replaced. Also, there is a crack at the keel to hull join. Does anyone have any experience with this? If so, can you send along any advice...cost estimates...extent of repairs? I know the jobs are involved but, I'm curious if these are problems with other H 31's. Thanks

Mast support problems are common on many older boats. Either they used steel that rusts over time (Cal) or they used wood which either rots from bilge water or deck leaks. Another common problem is the main chainplates and leaks into the cored deck from this area as all chainplates move a bit. And crushing of deck in the mast location again due to core problems. There should not be core under the mast but some boats do - the Hunter 27 being one. Bolt on keels need the filler at the join renewed periodically and this is common as well.
As far as repair costs, it depends on the extent of the damage and whether you will do this or a yard will. If you're reasonably handy it is not really complicated or expensive to fix either. On the other hand it's not hard to spend 5k to 10k or more to a yard for this kind of repair. Pictures would help showing the extent of work required. You need 10 posts to add pics or can link to a pic server.

Thanks for the info...very useful

I appreciate your thread...the compression post does not appear too bad...I'm more concerned about where the water was coming from...the cracks along the keel and not wide...but there is significant rust around the area...I'll have to try to get some pics on...more posts I suppose thanks again.
