Thoughts on this 22' Tanzer sailbot for sale?

I'm looking to buy my first boat. This looks like the type of boat I'm looking for, and in the right price range. Does it seem like a decent deal assuming it's in good condition?
Thoughts?

My Tanzer

I have a 25 foot Tanzer and its been a great boat ! I single hand sail, I couldn't ask for more ! If its in great shape, jump on it, you won't be sorry !

I'm meeting the seller in an hour, but I just went and saw it by myself. I want a better idea of if the price of $2800 seems about right.

It definitely needs the hull cleaned, as do ALL the other boats on those docs that I saw. I'm sure it's just a result of not being used all winter. The motor and rudder are sitting in the water, so they are really dirty as well.

It could definitely also use a paint job, esp. the white on top. And the woodwork hasn't been varnished in ages. I actually think both of those sound like fairly fun projects. I'm not sure about cleaning the bottom.

Thoughts?

Anything else I should make sure to ask about or look at besides the sails?
He says the sails are original, and not torn, however because they are so old, they are a bit stretched. It's a 1974.

If the seller left the rudder and motor down all winter, I'd be suspicious of how well the boat is maintained. But most boats in this price range probably suffer from that same problem. And 35 year old sails will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. They might be fine for now. You won't get the performance out of them that a new sail would give, but you might not care about that. Sooner or later they will tear. Try picking at the stitching and see if it breaks.

Sailing Dog's "Boat Inspection Trip Tips" is an excellent starting point to evaluate the boat and decide whether it merits more attention.

I know a guy with a T22. The boat sails well. He had some leaky port light problems. I would also check the chain plates on a boat this old. It is a good old boat if well maintained. $2800 sounds a tad high since it does not seem to have a trailer included. Check the prices for Catalina 22's near you. The T22 may be able to command a few more bucks but not much. Having a working trailer will save you mucho dinero if you have a place to store the boat on your property instead of a marina.

I've been looking for boats like this in Portland, too. Maybe I'm being too nice to the "competition" but there is a Tanzer 7.5(25) in SEattle with a trailer that looks much nicer. There is an ad on Seattle Craigslist.
Good luck!

For reference, back in 2002 I bought a Tanzer 22 that was probably in pretty similar shape to that one, for $1700. I didn't come with an outboard, so I picked up a used 6hp for $500. Then over the course of 5 or 6 seasons, I completely updated the boat, replaced all the sails, standing rigging, added spin gear, traveler, adjustable backstay, rope clutches, roller furler, new trailer, racing bottom, refinished all the teak, etc. I sold the boat last year for something under $4k. No regrets, I knew I wasn't going to get my money back out of the boat when I was redoing it. It was a great boat and was everything I wanted in a first boat. I sold it to get something bigger and a lot faster. I guess my point is that if you're going to buy a boat that hasn't been updated, it should be dirt cheap. Better yet, find one like mine that has been updated with a seller who understands that it isn't a $10k boat regardless of how much he spent on it. If you get that boat don't paint the topsides or deck. The original gelcoat was very thick. Try wet sanding it with 400 grit then polishing with an aggressive polish. Mine looked like new.

99,

I looked at a T22 for another fellow here in southern Oregon about a year ago. Hard to tell the relative condition from the pictures, but I would guess them to be similar. The one I looked at needed TLC but was sailable. It had a newer 9.9 Honda 4 stroke and was on a very nice trailer. Asking price was $2500.00 before any negotiations.

Thanks for the input everyone.

So, I found a Catalina 22 ($2800), and a Cal 2-24 ($3200). I can't seem to find a lot of talk online about the Cal 24, but I think I really like it. Any thoughts on it? Also, is has a roller furling, which we definitely make it easier for single-handing.

Anyone?

Cal sailboats have a good reputation and build quality. If it were my choice between a Cat 22' and a Cal 24' for nearly identical prices I would choose the Cal 24' with the roller furling jib.
If I was intending on using the boat as a trailer sailor I might consider going with the Cat 22'. I'm not sure how heavy or trailerable the Cal 24' is but if trailering the boat is not a high priority I'd get the Cal.
