Pearson 323 choice
Hello all, im looking to buy my first boat. ive been set on the 323 and have 2 here in long beach. i would like any feed back comparing the two. my main thoughts are this which i have after look at both today...
both have or had tabernacle mast
1978 no longer does was converted back, but mast is still 2 parts
1977 is still tabernacle with the appropriate rigging
the whole tabernacle thing bothers me because it seems like the mast would be weeker now since it was keel stepped (just my think but i am new to sailboats)
the 78 has the volvo penta which iv read is good, and the 77 has the atomic 4 which is gas. im not say gas is a downside but most dont like it for the common reasons, more explosive, and can emit dangerous fumes. as a liveaboard this bothers me a bit, but again i dont know enough to judge but rather be on the safe side.
the 78 has had the 40gal water tank coverted to a holding tank, not sure why nor the quality of the job... the 323 does have another 38gals in 2 tanks further aft.
these are my main concerns and thoughts, and realize a survey will give the most light to the issues, but i would rather only do one, as the buying process is somewhat setup that way (though o wouldnt oppose doing it on both)
please give me any and all feedback (even if you think i should walk away from both). thank you much
I'd go for the one with the diesel. If you buy the one with Atomic 4 you will repower eventually and that will cost 7k to 10k. Volvo parts are expensive but they are good engines. Not sure about the tabernacle mast but a surveyor can give you a good opinion.
You should buy the '78. The only reason i can give is that I am looking at the
'77. I also am doing this to livaboard. I am relocating from Oregon but will not be able to purchase until the end of the month. I will be depending greatly on the survey of whatever boat i decide to make an offer on. Was down last week and looked at many boats. Did you look at the Laguna 30 in the same area? Great use of interior space.
Before spending money on a survey, you really should go over the boat yourself, to see if the boat is even worth looking at further. I'd recommend you read the Boat Inspection Trip Tips thread I started/
