lesser of 2 weevels???

Ok, enough of the funny quotes from movies.
I am looking at 2 identical model boats, both were made by a company in Nova Scotia and later bought out by AMF.
I would like some opinions from the general populous.

Boat A: 1980 Py26 that has spent a good portion of it's life racing around the buoys.
The plus of the boat is the sail arsenal, I believe there are 8 sails and all are said to be in good condition. rebuilt diesel.
The bad is what I stated previously: raced for a major portion of it's 30 year life.

Boat B: 1979 Py26 roller furler with a decent main and head sail along with a spinnaker. no paperwork, original diesel.
This boat is unmolested, the only hole drilled in the boat holds a bulkhead mount compass.
not even a radio...


I am a little concerned about Boat A due to the stresses placed on the boat over the course (no pun intended) of its life.
It has a newer diesel and all the goodies and would cost us approximately an additional 1500 to purchase.

Is it worth the extra dough?

I think it would depend more on condition and maintenance than whether it was raced or not. A survey should tell of problems. Local racing isn't likely to be the issue that hard offshore racing is.

What are the sails? If they are 'racing' sails, chances are you would never use them for cruising. Are they dacron or composites? Composites are a pain for cruising since you have to be extra careful with them (flogging, careful folding). I would look very carefully at maintenance and overall quality. Note that a newer engine with worse upkeep is 'older' than an original engine that has had proper care. Also, are the hours on the racing boat mainly just getting in and out of harbour? This can be very hard on the engine since it may not reach proper operating temperature each time.
