Salvage titles

I've been scourign the internet researching all aspects of sailboats and such and i came across an interesting posting on Fatty Goodlanders site about buying a boat that had a salvage title? How does that work? What causes a boat to get a salvage title? Is the boat no longer sea-worthy? Just curious and looking at all options. I am the little guy, with limited funds so I have to consider all angles.

Thanx in advance,
Brian W3ODF

Salvage titles can be issued for a lot of different reasons. One common one over the last few years is being total lossed by an insurance company for storm-related damage. There were quite a few salvage titled boats after Katrina, Rita and sisters went through.

Some are just junk, others are indeed salvageable for more than parts. My friends are re-building a Cape Dory 30 that was a storm salvage titled boat.

However, I'd point out that buying and refurbishing a storm-damaged boat is generally going to cost more than buying the same boat in reasonably good shape to begin with. IMHO, it is generally unwise for anyone, especially a n00b, to buy a salvage title boat and expect to get it seaworthy for a reasonable amount of time and money.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
