There are times you have to go forward (sail gets stuck on rigging, helping pull a halyard to raise a sail, something comes loose) and those portlights are dangerous. I have slipped, more than once on them. ...

Hello Brian,

If you read again my post you will see that I did not contest that point...because I agree with you on that

Some European boats, like Hanse (and I am sure others but I am not sure about brands) that don't have so big hatches now have anti-Skidding bands on their hatches.

I was only pointing out that those "big windows" are nor as fragile as they look. Personally I don't even like the kind of boats that use them, and I think that confounding that kind of boats with the French production is just unfair.

Even Jeanneau besides the decksallon line has another one of very good sailing boats that don't have those kind of hatches. Dufour and First don't have them also.

Back to Jeanneau and the cruising line, take a look at this two, the 42 and the 49. Both are good and fast cruising boats and to my eyes a lot more beautiful and efficient (as sailboats) than their DS versions:

Ahhh... I see! I figured you probably would not be a huge fan of them. Incidentally, I have heard some really positive things about the 49DS. Zanshin has one, IIRC. I will say that she has pretty lines. Who knows, maybe I would get over those huge portlights!??? I am sure he has a great view inside.

Take care,

Brian

I am not saying that the Jeanneau DS are bad sailing boats, quite the contrary, they are remarkably good for a DS boat. I am just saying that the standard line are just better sailing boats, specially on the performance version.

Regarding the views, while seating in the saloon, they are about the same, unless you have some mountains around . Only standing you would have a better view on the DS. The difference is basically, the amount of light inside, that is a lot bigger on the DS.

Aside aesthetics taste, the big problem with that kind of design (big windows that don't open) is hot climates. On those (like the Med or Caribbean) you need to cover the "windows" from outside to prevent overheating (summer time) and then you don't have that loving light anymore .

But, of course, on a Marina the DS can have its air conditioning running, and that makes it a more enjoyable boat ...and we all pass some time at the marina .

Regards

Paulo

Brian,

Zanshin will sell you HIS boat! He wants one of the new 57's! Just think, then you can be a French mustachio'd boat owner like me, with a french barby on the deck, AND the kitchen!

Marty
