How did he get over the Great Divide? I've been over it a few times and believe me, it's no place for boating! On one trip over it in Glacier Park in Northern Montana I was getting worried about my Corvette making it.
The Rockies are quite a barrier - Lewis & Clark portaged and hiked and replaced boats and so forth I believe. If you could make it to Oregon, you could easily make it all the way to the Pacific - it's downhill there.
