Sailboat inspector/mechanic/expert for NYC

Hello Everyone

A friend of a friend owns a boat yard.

He is in the process of liquidating it and closing it down.

Apparently he has a bunch of sailboats that he kept when people failed to pay their bills.

He is looking to liquidate them.

So it sounds like I could pick up a bargain.

On the other hand I could pick up a major headache for years to come.

Does anyone know someone in the NYC area who could come along and help me examine the boats?

I can pay for the service..

Andreas

This is called a "surveyor."

Find a boat that you like, then have the surveyor come back with you to survey that boat. It should cost you between $15 and $20 per foot.

Of course if you're just kicking tires, I am sure that lots of people from SailNet will come and give you their opinions... at $15 / hour...

Can you recommend a surveyor in the NYC region?

Your BEST resource to locate a surveyor is ActiveCaptain.

Create an account
Log In
Click on the tab "CaptainRated"
Click on "Services"
Click on "Surveyors"
narrow your search by geography.

I gave the dude that ripped me off on a survey, the rating that he earned. Kudos to the Siegal's for checking with me, and assuring that my 2 star review was accurate and fair (it was). They took the time and effort to weed out any reviews that were posted by trolls and cranks. BTW - My review is still there.

I'm in NYC.
For gas money for my car I'd go and look at some boats with you.
Owned our Tartan 27' for 10 years so I know a thing or two about older boats and engines.
Send me a private message (PM).

It probably goes without saying; but, if you do buy something you need to make sure that you have clear title.

Good point on title,
When they repossessed the boat they had to run some paperwork
might need a lawyer to get it cleared though
