Cal39 or Catalina38

I have happily owned a 1971 Cal 25 for the last 6 years. My wife and I feel its time to move up. We have a purchase budget of 60k. After careful evaluation of our sailing needs and future financial responsibilities (college) I am considering the following (mid 1980’s) Cal 39, Catalina 36 and S&S Catalina 38. Excellent Catalina information is available on the web (I consider this information to be of tremendous value) but very little on the Cal39. Unfortunately, there appears to be no active owners forum for the Cal39. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they only built 150. The Cal 25 is a great boat and I have only heard good things about Bill Lapworth’s other designs such as the Cal40. I suppose I am drawn to the Cal 39 due to my satisfaction with the Cal 25 and the legendary reputation of the Cal40. Can anyone offer information and/or suggestions?

It may be to late.. Just saw this post...
The Cal 39 is without a doubt a classic. It is a terrific performer, well designed cruiser and a current ownership population that remains very enthusiastic about their boats.

Catalina 38. . . so- so.. Nice but not even in the same league as the Cal -39

Agree whole heartedly with Bluesmoods.

The Cal 39 is immensely better tha the Catalina 36 or 38. You are on the right track. Good luck.

Check out the Sailnet mailing list for Cal boats at cal-list@sailnet.net. You must ''join'' the list as far as I know but a digest of previous mail may be available. There are several Cal 39 owners active on that list and lots of info is available there.

I have a 1970 Cal 40 that is in your price range if you are interested in that.
