San Diego Marine Survey & Mechanic

We put on offer on an older sailboat 40' in San Diego and the only surveyor that I've found that comes highly recommended is Kells Christian. However the listing broker bans him from his boats, which I've never heard of, but anyway, if anyone knows of an excellent surveyor and/or mechanic it would be appreciated.

If you a buyer you want Christian, brokers call him a deal buster because he is good.

Just out of curiosity, is the listing broker Cabrillo yacht?

No, the broker is from Cays. I am not meaning to bad mouth anyone. I really don't know this guy at all. Just seems suspiscious to me to ban a surveyor and trying to figure it out.

Re: San Diego Marine Survey & Mechanic

it is suspicious. the surveyor is up to you-- tell pos broker that if you cannot have kjels, you will not consider that boat. he is hungry as boats are not selling like hotcakes and he needs his commission.
if he doesnt agree--walk away. be strong and walk with confidence. there is another boat exactly like that one only wthout whatever problems cause that broker to not appreciate kjels christian.

Re: San Diego Marine Survey & Mechanic

as for mechanic---marine mechanic has a van--he is good. van usually parked in shelter island near downwind marine--but i dont know where he keeps it--- most folks will have his number--see if downwind marine folks know it...they may.

he is expensive, as are all marine mechanics in sd.

Re: San Diego Marine Survey & Mechanic

The guy with the van is Phil, Marine Man (619-990-1448). He didn't survey my engine but I had questions later and got good help from him on some work I was doing to it. Perhaps you can ask Dan who works in SD Marine Exchange about a surveyor. I was impressed with SDEX and Downwind Marine, even though they took a lot of my money while I was down there...

Re: San Diego Marine Survey & Mechanic

of course they took your money--you didnt get the friend of them discount??? is easy to obtain, and is about 10 percent off for you normal folks......and the best advice anywhere and friendly and good souls....

kjels is only surveyor you want in sd--he will actually help you, not merely make a buck doing a bank or or insurance needed survey. very good and very smart--ask him a lot of questions as he will give you truthful answers. as for my money--there is no other surveyor in sd....

SDMX gave me the new boater discount and STILL took a lot of my money, but that's just the nature of the beast. I had been looking at boats in Seattle, Santa Barbara and San Francisco, and now that every thing is said and done and I know what I didn't know then, buying my boat in SD was pure joy. I love the people there and at SDMX. It was super easy to get things done, and get great advice and recommendations. Even the trip north was a charm

I didn't go with Kells because that is who the broker had recommended (which made me suspicious), but she did say that all the brokers around there call him the deal breaker.
